Janet Delgaty, birth date 03 Apr 1861, birth place Duns, Berwick, Scotland
Parents William Delgaty and Alison Christison

Death reg. 018986-38 Bayfield, Stanley Twp., Huron Co.
Janet Delgaty died August 23, 1938, at Bayfield, Stanley Township. Length of stay at place of death 55 years. Born Duns, Scotland, on April 3, 1861. Age 77 yrs., 4 mos., 20 dys. Husband Robert Delgaty. Parents Wm. Delgaty and Alice Christison, both born Scotland. Physician J. A. Addison, Zurich, Ontario. Informant Isabella Westlake, Bayfield, daughter.

The above two records compare well, date of birth included. Reference to Janet's mother in both her marriage and death registrations shows the as Alice. It becomes evident looking over the birth records of siblings as well as the 1861, 1871, and 1881 Scottish censuses, that Alice's correct (maiden) name was Alison Christison. Alison may, however, have been actually known as Alice. The 1891 census shows her as Alice.

As for Janet Delgaty's own census information, at first glance this appears problematic. First consider that Janet was born in on the 3rd of April, 1861. The Scottish census was begun on Sunday, April 7th, of the year. Just how long the census took to complete we are not told, but the enumerator showed Janet as being one month old when at the time of his visit, and in this census she is indeed named as Janet.

The 1871 and 1881 censuses show her as Jessie. It would be tempting to think that Janet had not survived and that there was another child. We have her Canadian records, however, and her death registration especially makes it entirely clear as to who her parents were. We must conclude that 'Jessie' in the 1871 and 1881 censuses represent a nickname for her. Certainly, the age is right for 'Jessie' to be Janet.
