| Note | The death of Marcus Keachie was before the era of civil death registrations. Marcus' name and date of death, shown as 5 August, 1861, was probably added to the stone in later years, an error being made at the time. Rosemary Ambrose transcribed birth, marriage, and death registrations from the Dumfries Reformer for the Waterloo branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. She records the 26 June, 1861, edition of the paper with the information that Marcus Keachie, a watchmaker, died at Brantford on 18 June, 1861. Marcus was in St. Mary's in Perth County a few months previously, for he was recorded there, as a watchmaker, in the 1861 census which began on January 4. The Reformer death notice shows him as being age 22. The family gravestone shows his age as 21 years and 10 months. This latter is probably correct and so his month and year of birth is calculated from this. The Reformer notice also describes him as formerly of Galt and, indeed, he appeared in Galt with his parents, Hugh and Mary, as of January of 1852 when the 1851 census was begun. |
