Joseph Pickett
ID # 7242, (1815-1907)
| Baptism | Joseph Pickett was baptized on 28 April 1815 at England. |
| Marriage | He married Susannah Husband, daughter of John Husband and Alicia Napier, on 13 November 1841. See Ontario Marriage Notices, Thomas B. Wilson, Hunterdon House, Lambertville, N.J., 1982, page 81. Extracted from the Christian Guardian, Toronto, edition of 3 November, 1841, this tells that Joseph Pickett and Susan Husband, both of Nelson, were married on 13th ult. (13th October). This does not tell us where the marriage was held. This predates the surviving Gore District Marriage Register. |
| Death | He died on 8 March 1907 at Toronto Twp., Peel Co., at age 91. |
| Burial | He was buried on 10 March 1907 at Clarkson Cemetery, Clarkson, Peel County. |
| Note | It's difficult to know the trajectory of the lives of Joseph, Susannah, and their children in their early years of marriage. The Wesleyan Methodist baptisms shows son Abner, apparently their first born, as being born and baptized in Nelson Township of what became Halton County in 1843. Likewise, this tells essentially the same story for daughter Alice in 1844. Alice has yet to be researched, but Abner's death registration places his birth in Seneca (township, located in Haldimand County) where the 1861 census records the family's presence. It's safe to say the Abner was baptized in Nelson Township, but born there? By the time of the 1861 census, Joseph and Susannah with their children are located in Seneca Township in Haldimand County. They have yet to be found in the 1851 census. The 1871 census shows them as residing in Trafalgar Township in Halton County. McGill University's website The Canadian County Atlas Digital Project has extracted information from an 1877 atlas for Joseph Picket. This tells that he is by this time on 75 acres in Toronto Township, Peel County, on lot 25 (not 26), Concession 3, SDS (South of Dundas Street). A Toronto Township abstract index, as provided by Familysearch, shows Joseph Pickett purchasing a portion (acreage not given) of lot 25 of the 3rd concession SDS (South of Dundas Street) from Jabez Spencer in October of 1873. (Son Henry Pickett purchased 1 acres of lot 26 in 1901.) The issue of lot numbers is only mentioned because when Susannah died in 1897, her residence is shown as lot 26. Either the 1877 atlas is in error or there is more to the story The 1881 and 1891 censuses show Joseph and Susannah in Toronto Township of Peel County. We may note here that census information is consistent in showing Joseph's place of birth as England and Susannah's as Ireland. By the time of the 1901 census, Joseph, of course, is a widower. He resides with son Harry and daughters Sarah and Eliza. This census tells us that Joseph came to Canada in 1828. Joseph's date of birth is also given. The year isn't entire legible, but, comparing it with his age, 86, we may say that his date of birth was 28 April, 1815. Death reg. 023869-07 Toronto Twp., Peel Co. Joseph Pickett died March 8th, 1907, age 92 years. Residence Clarkson. Gentleman (retired), married (widower). Born England. Methodist. Physician Dr. Sutton. Informant Harry Picket. Henry Husband, in a diary entry of March 14th, 1907, tells of attending Joseph Picket's funeral on Sunday. This will have been the 10th. He identifies the cemetery as Clarkson Cemetery. This is now Springcreek Cemetery in Mississauga. What the correct name of the cemetery may have been when Joseph Pickett died, I do not know, but Henry Husband called it Clarkson Cemetery, so we'll stick with that. Considering it's location, in old Clarkson, Ontario (now part of the city of Mississauga), this makes sense. A photograph is to be found of Joseph Pickett and Susannah Husband's gravestone on the website Canadian Headstones. Note that Henry spells his brother-in-law's surname with one T, but the name is spelled with two TT's on the gravestone and this latter is used in this tree. |
