Talbot District Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Jacob Goble, Baptist Minister, Villanova, Townsend, from the 10th February, 1851, to the 22nd February, 1852.

Richard Fuster and Catherine Husband, residing Walpole.
Witnesses George Husband and Samuel Bowman
By License.

The Talbot District by this time was defunct, though the clerk at town of Simcoe continued to enter marriages in the Talbot Marriage Register for at least a time. Walpole Township became a part of the new county of Haldimand and Villanova in Townsend Township became part of the new county of Norfolk.

Where were Richard and Catharine married? We don't know. If Rev. Goble rode around his territory by horseback, he may well have married the couple at a residence in Walpole. Or Richard and Catharine may have gone to Villanova to marry. A newspaper notice might tell the tale, but one hasn't been found.

DeathShe died on 29 January 1924 at Chatham Township, Kent Co., at age 89.
BurialShe was buried on 1 February 1924 at Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham, Ontario.
NoteShe Catharine's date of birth is taken from the 1901 census in Chatham Township.

Catharine and Richard's marriage registration was entered in the old Talbot District marriage register. See her marriage notes for a discussion of this. She and Richard were resident in Walpole Township at the time of their marriage, 10 December, 1851, and this was still the case when the 1851 census was enumerated (actually begun in January of 1852) in Walpole Township of Haldimand County, of which Walpole Township was now a part. Richard and Catharine are present in an extended Fewster household.

The 1861 census shows them still in Walpole. With them are four children, but also present with them in this household is her younger half-sister Hannah J. Husband, age 15.

Hannah appears with her sister Mary with their mother Susan, George Husband's last wife, in Gainsborough Township. Susan is now married to John McIntyre, a tailor. Susan is still living with John in the 1861 census and there are three young McIntyre children, reasonably Susan's. Whatever the circumstances, Hannah was with sister Catharine as of the 1861 census.

By 1871, Catharine and Richard are in Burford of Brant County where Richard is a hotel Keeper.

By 1881 the family is in Chatham Township and have with them 7 children. They appear to have lived out their days in Chatham Township.

Richard is still living as of the 1891 census, but by the 1901 census, Catharine is a widow.

Catharine's death registration does not show the names of her parents. Her place of birth is not given precisely, but does tell that she was born in the Niagara District, which, at the time, 1834, would be correct. She was probably born in Pelham Township, but we have no such definitive record.
