Welland County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by the Rev. W. E. Cooper, a minister of the Anglican Church of Canada, fyled on 27 January, 1868, for 1867 marriages.

Clark 'Yaker' and Louisa James, both residing Welland. Witness Wm. Lewis of Port Colborne, on Oct. 1, 1867.

The information provided in the above marriage is rather more minimal than typical for this era. Ages of the parties, places of birth and parental information have been omitted. The exact location of marriage is not usually provided in county marriage registrations.

Fuller marriage information has been sought in church records, but not found.

As the marriage was Anglican, it seems likely that it was held in the bride's church. The 1861 census at Clifton (now part of the city of Niagara Falls), seems to show the James family as being Anglican, though the entry isn't as clear as usual.

By 1875, the family of Clark and Louisa is evidently Wesleyan Methodist, for there is a baptism record in this church for three of their children, all baptized on the same date.

We may safely say that Clark Yuker was not born in Scotland.

The U.S. 1850 census shows Clark, age 4, with his parents, John and Sally, and two siblings, in the town of Penfield, Monroe County, New York State. The whole family is shown as being born in New York.

The 1860 census shows Clark 'Euchre', age 15, again with parents John and Sally, and now with a younger brother, in Penfield.

By the time of the 1871 census in Canada, Clark is in Thorold Township, Welland County, with wife Louisa (James) and daughters Florence and Clara.

By the time of the 1881 census, he is in Hamilton with his family and still there as of the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

The 1901 census shows hs date of birth as Oct 3, 1844, his place of birth as the U.S., his year of coming to Canada as 1863, and his year of naturalization as 1873.

The 1871 thru 1901 censuses all show Clark Yuker as being born in the United States.

Confirmation that Clark's mother's maiden was Doughton has yet to be found, and Clark's death registration may be correct on this point, but there is coincidental evidence to suggest that her maiden name may have been Boughton.

The American connection of the Yuker family was obviously kept for a number of years. For the following we are indebted to fultonhistory.com. This is a newspaper database and a link most genealogists should find useful.

Page 2 of the June 18, 1914 edition of the Monroe County Mail has a column for Walworth Village news. This tells of Clark Yuker and his wife of Hamilton spending time with brother Lemuel Yuker visiting family friends.

Page 12 of the July 28, 1927 edition of the Herald-Mail, Fairport, N.Y., also has a column for Walworth. This tells of a visit of Mrs. Clark Yuker with Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Yuker (probably Lemuel.)
