| Note | A source for information for the children of Amos Merigold and Nancy Cody is the 1954 book The Cody Family in America, 1698. This provides us with a considerable background for Nancy Cody and tells us something of her father, Philip Cody, and her uncle Joseph Cody. This book was published by Lydia s. Cody, chairman, Historical Board, and printed by Cody Publications of Kissimmee, Florida. This is quite a Cody family effort. An excellent aspect, for our purposes, is that it lists the children of Amos Merigold and Nancy Cody (see page 32.) Much of this is to a considerable degree verifiable by Canadian records. It provides dates of birth and also has a minimal background for the family of Amos Merigold. The Cody book tells us that Nancy Cody was born in Peel County on March 9, 1806. Her death registration tells us that she was born in Toronto. There was no city of Toronto until March 6, 1834. Also, at the time of Nancy's birth, there was no Peel County. The township of Toronto was in the Home District in what later became Peel County. The 1851 census in Burford shows Amos and Nancy 'Marygould' in Burford with eight children, the first listed being Emily. It is now evident that this child's correct name as Amarilla. According to the Cody book, Amarilla had an older sister, Martha Maria Merigold, born in 1823 and evidently married prior to the 1851 census. Death reg. 004719-99 City of Brantford, Brant Co. Nancy Merigold died 13 March, 1899, age 94. Residence 59 Wittington. Widow. Methodist. Born Toronto. Physician Dr. R. Henwood. Informant C. H. Fowler. |
