William E. Decew
ID # 7973, (1840-)
| Baptism | William E. Decew was baptized in September 1840. |
| Marriage | He married Susannah Husband, daughter of Robert Husband and Susannah Elizabeth Aikens, on 19 September 1865 at Waterdown, Flamborough East Township. A record of this marriage has not been found in the County Marriage Registers, typically on the MS248 series of microfilm reels. Where a record has been found is in a publication entitled Wentworth County United Churches, formerly Congregational, Methodist, and Presbyterian, assembled and published in 2013 by the Halton-Peel and Toronto branches of the Ontario Genealogical Society. This particular marriage is listed under marriages for the Waterdown Methodist Circuit, 1858-1876. Waterdown is in what was then Flamborough East Township of Wentworth County, which bordered Nelson Township in Halton County, wherein resided the bride's family. It's entirely possible that the marriage was conducted at the residence of the bride's parents, but this isn't stated, and so, for the moment, the marriage is shown as being held in Waterdown. Groom: W. E. Decew, 26, born and residing Canada. Parents Robert and Margaret Decew. Bride: Sussana Husband, 20, born Canada, residing Nelson. Parents Robert and Sussanah Husband. Witness J. Zimmerman of Nelson. On 19 September, 1865, by J. Scott. Both Wentworth and Halton county registers as well as indexes have been searched for this marriage, but not found. Interestingly, the format presented in the above record strongly suggests that the clergyman entered the record of the marriage on a county registration form. Some clergy did use the form, both for submission to the civil authority and for their own church records. |
| Note | W. E. Deceu, age 21, appears with his parents, Robert and Margaret, in Oneida Township of Haldimand County as of the 1861 census. He, with all his family members, are shown as being born in Canada West. At first glance, the enumerator's handwriting being what it is, it appears that the family is of the Methodist Church, which confession not shown. A closer look at the handwriting suggests that they were New Connection Methodists. The 1900 census in Rochester, New York, shows William E. Decew, born September of 1840, in Canada. He is said to be a manufacturer of soap. With him is his wife Susana, born October, 1844. She is said to have had no children. This census tells that they came to the United States in 1882, which may be, but they have yet to be found in the 1871 or 1881 censuses in Canada. A later record for the couple has not been found. |
