| Note | For the present, information for John McIntyre is scarce. Almost certainly, the marriage of John McIntyre and Susan Hoowee Husband would have been in District days, prior to 1850. With the advent of counties in what became the southern portion of Ontario, marriage registrations were required from all churches. In District days, however, only the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches were deemed to be official, and, hence, were not required to return registrations of marriage to the District registrar. It may be said here, and this is entirely an personal opinion, though one gained by peering over transcriptions of these registrations, that the Society of Friends (Quakers) also did not appear to be too assiduous in making such returns. Whatever the story, we do not have a marriage registration for John and Susan. It is possible that there may be some mention of it in the meeting minutes of the Friends, but such has yet to be found. Our only knowledge to be gained their marriage is to be found in the marriage registration of Alexander McIntyre to his second wife, Sarah Freeborn, in Wellesley Township of Waterloo County in 1894. The 1851 census (begun January 1852) at Gainsborough Township shows John and Susanh, as well as their children as Roman Catholic. This includes George and Susan's daughters, Mary and Hannah. The 1861 census, however, which shows only John, Susan, and their three children, Charles, Joseph, and Alexander, has John as Roman Catholic and the rest of the family as Quaker. The 1871 census shows John as Roman Catholic. The rest of the family present, two of John and Susan's sons, Joseph and Alexander, as well as Harvey Fuller, age 7, Susan's grandson by way of daughter Hannah, as Quaker. The 1881 census is back to showing the family members present as Roman Catholic, the next household includes, that of son Alexander with wife Prudence. Considering that Susan McIntyre died in 1884 and is buried under the name McIntyre in the Pelham Hicksite Quaker Cemetery, we must guess the 1871 census to be essentially correct, or at least correct at the time. (Note that the pages as they appear in the 1881 census are quite out of order.) A certain record for John McIntyre of Gainsborough, after the 1881 census, has not been found. |
