| Marriage | He married Louise Bender on 31 March 1852 at Wellington District. Wellington District marriages do not appear on the MS248 series of microfilm reels as found at the Archives of Ontario. Rather, the Wellington District Marriage Register has bee microfilmed, but is held by the Wellington County Museum at Fergus, Ontario. The register, which was for a long time missing, was found in a bookstore by a lady who purchased it with her own funds and then donated it to the museum. This has been transcribed by Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai, and is entitled The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada/Canada West, Vol. 90, Pt. 1, Wellington District, 1840-1852. This is available from Global Genealogy, Ottawa, in either print or PDF format. The entry for the marriage of George Maurer and Louise Bander is to be found on page 127. This is shown under marriages performed by Rev. Wilhelm Schmidt of Wilmot. The record does not locate the residences of bride or groom, though was probably in Wilmot Township of what became Waterloo County. The record reads: George Maurer, 27, to Loise Bander, 16-1/2, 31 March, 1852, by banns. Rev. Schmidt. Witnesses Joel Good and Abraham Eby. Wellington District and then, later, Wellington County, were headquartered in Guelph. The county was considerably smaller than the district. The district was comprised of townships that included most of the townships of what became Waterloo County and several that were later a part of Grey County. |

George's date of birth, if calculated from the above information, works out to December 26, 1824. The 1901 census show his date of birth to be 27 December, 1824. This information would have been provided to the enumerator by George or Louise and is the more likely to be correct. |
