Louise Bender

ID # 8075, (1835-1901)
BirthLouise Bender was born on 28 October 1835 at Eschelbach, Germany.
MarriageShe married George Maurer on 31 March 1852 at Wellington District.
Wellington District marriages do not appear on the MS248 series of microfilm reels as found at the Archives of Ontario. Rather, the Wellington District Marriage Register has bee microfilmed, but is held by the Wellington County Museum at Fergus, Ontario. The register, which was for a long time missing, was found in a bookstore by a lady who purchased it with her own funds and then donated it to the museum. This has been transcribed by Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai, and is entitled The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada/Canada West, Vol. 90, Pt. 1, Wellington District, 1840-1852. This is available from Global Genealogy, Ottawa, in either print or PDF format.

The entry for the marriage of George Maurer and Louise Bander is to be found on page 127. This is shown under marriages performed by Rev. Wilhelm Schmidt of Wilmot. The record does not locate the residences of bride or groom, though was probably in Wilmot Township of what became Waterloo County. The record reads:

George Maurer, 27, to Loise Bander, 16-1/2, 31 March, 1852, by banns. Rev. Schmidt. Witnesses Joel Good and Abraham Eby.

Wellington District and then, later, Wellington County, were headquartered in Guelph. The county was considerably smaller than the district. The district was comprised of townships that included most of the townships of what became Waterloo County and several that were later a part of Grey County.

DeathShe died on 15 November 1901 at Berlin, Waterloo Co., Ontario, at age 66.
BurialShe was buried on 17 November 1901 at Calvary Conservative Mennonite Cemetery, Woolwich Twp..
NoteShe The marriage registration for Louise and George has her maiden name as Bander. They are buried in Calvary Conservative Mennonite Cemetery in Woolwich Township and they are immediately next to a family named Bender. That her name was Bender (there were many in Waterloo County) seems logical. It is now found that, courtesy Simon Fraser University, an obituary appeared for Louisa Maurer in the Berlin Journal edition of November 21, 1901, page 5. This confirms her maiden name of Bender. The one piece of conflicting information is that it claims that Louisa died 16 November. Both her death registration and her gravestone say she died 15 November 1901. The obituary provides the date of her burial.

Death reg. 027648-02 Berlin, Waterloo Co.
Louisa Maurer died November 15, 1901. Age 66 years. Residence John Street. Housewife. Born Eschelbach, Germany. Evangelical. Physician and informant Dr. J. E. Hett.

Louisa's gravestone states her age to be 66 years and 18 days. Her date of birth, 28 October, 1835, is calculated from this. This agrees with her date of birth as given in the 1901 census.
