| Note | For the following refer Men of Upper Canada, Militia Nominal Rolls, 1828-1829, Bruce Elliott, Dan Walker, and Fawne Stratford-Devai, 1995, published by the Toronto branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, 1995, page 142. This shows Smith Griffin, age 26, one of a substantial showing of Griffins (some at least probably siblings) in the 10th Company of the 4th Regiment of Lincoln Militia. A preamble note indicates that the personnel for the regiment were drawn from Grimsby Township, but that some were also from Caistor, Clinton, and Gainsborough townships. A difficulty with estimating Smith's year of birth is that we can't be sure of the exact year this training assemblage occurred. That Smith was of Grimsby township has at least the ring of sense. Mercy's father Daniel was at some point connected with a Presbyterian church in Grimsby so that Mercy and Smith met in Grimsby seems reasonable. Add to that, Mercy is buried next to Eliza Griffin Nixon in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Brantford Township, and that Eliza's husband's Nixon parents are buried at the Anglican church in Grimsby and the relationship at least to this imperfect degree seems reasonable. We do not have a death date for Smith or a place of burial. |
