| Note | Page 194 of A Brief History of Jacob Wismer and a complete Genealogical Family Register, by Rev. A. J. Fretz of Milton, New Jersey, 1893, Mennonite Publishing Co. of Elkhart, Indiana, has it that Stilman Wismer's parents were Abraham Wismer, born Waterloo County in April of 1827. He married Susanna Mott, who was born in Oxford County on September 10, 1833. They had children Rachel, John, Stillman, and Rebecca. The author goes on to tell that Stillman J. Wismer married Mary 'Musser' of P.O. Blair, Ontario. Why Mary may have had Blair as a post office address at some point in her life is unknown (the village of Blair is south of present day Kitchener and part of the city of Cambridge). We are on safe ground with Stillman and Mary's marriage, however, for their parents are clearly named. Stillman is usually recorded in census information with his name spelled with one L. His name appears, however, on his death registration and his gravestone with two LLs and so this spelling is used in this tree. His middle initial was evidently J. Just what name this represented has yet to be found. Stilman Wismer, age 3, is found with his parents and older siblings in the 1861 census in West Williams Township of Middlesex County. The family is shown as Baptist. The 1861 census in Canada West was begun on January 4 of the year. Stilman's father Abraham, age 35 (perhaps an error), is still living, but he died not long after. He is buried in Sylvan Cemetery in West Williams and a transcription of his grave, as provided by the London branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, records the date of his death as 29 July, 1861, age 33 years and 3 months. A photograph of the stone appears to show the month as June, but the stone is in worn condition and so this is questionable. Thanks to a sharp eyed person who made an annotation to Ancestry's indexing, Stilman Wismer is found in the 1871 census in the household of Clark and Susan Johnson. Stilman's surname is recorded as Johnson, but the person who made the annotation is quite right, he is actually Stilman Wismer, and it becomes obvious that after Abraham's death, Stilman's mother, Susan Mott, remarried. A Middlesex County marriage registration has been found for Susan Wismer and Clark Johnson. They were married in 1864. It does not appear that Clark was previously married. With them are Susan's obviously Wismer children, but she also has three children who will be Clark's. By the time of the 1881 census, Stilman Wismer and Mary Moser are married. They are in Wilmot Township of Waterloo County. They are shown as Mennonist and Stilman is recorded as day labor. With this is son Edward, born in February of the year. He is said to be one month of age. The 1891 census shows Stillman and Mary, Mennonites, in Waterloo Township. He is shown as a farmer. Son Edward's life was brief and he is no longer with them, but they have three daughters. The 1901 census shows the family as being in Wellesley Township, where Stillman and Mary remained for the rest of their lives. Here, they are shown as Methodists. The census page is a bit of a mess, almost unreadable on some points (perhaps the best available copy may be found on automatedgenealogy.com). They have with them, apparently, three daughters and two sons, though one son's name is quite unclear. The family is still in Wellesley as of 1911 and Stillman is shown as a farmer and drover. The family is still shown as Methodist. Stillman and Mary are again in Wellesley Township as of the 1921 census. Stillman is shown as a drover. Death 034664-26 Wellesley Twp., Waterloo Co. Stillman J. Wismer died July 18, 1926. Age 68 yrs., 7 mos., 20 dys. Farmer and cattle buyer. Residence at place of death 4 years. Parents Abraham Wismer and Susan Mott, birth places unknown. Physician Dr. McEachern of Linwood. Informant Irwin Wismer, son. Place of burial Linwood on July 21, 1926. If we calculate Stillman's date of birth as shown in his death registration then it should say that he was born on 28 November, 1857. The 1901 census, however, shows his date of birth as 28 November 1858. His gravestone in Linwood Union Cemetery shows his year of birth as 1858, and it is left as such here. |
