| Note | A photograph of William James Hilliard's gravestone appears on CanGenWeb. This shows his year of birth to be 1851 and year of death to be 1948. There is no problem so far as his year of death is concerned. William's registration of death was filed by his second wife, Catherine Parker Hilliard. This originally showed his year of birth to be 1851 and at some point was corrected to show 1856. The Hilliard family has not been found in the 1861 census, but is present in Windham Township as of the 1871 census wherein William is show to be age 14. This would make a birth year of 1856 for William to be quite reasonable and, gravestone inscription notwithstanding, his year of birth is shown here as 1856. Bookton Cemetery in Windham Township of Norfolk County abounds with Hilliards and it is evident from marriage registrations as compared with a transcription of the cemetery as provided by the Norfolk County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society that William's parents were William Hillard, a native of Ireland, 1832-1902, and Ann Davis, 1825-1912. Death reg. 004453-48 Brantford, Brant Co. William Hilliard died in Brantford General Hospital on January 26, 1948. Residence RR1, Hatchley, Ont. Married. His place of birth is shown as Brant County. His date of birth was shown as October 7, 1851, and then corrected to 1856. (An annotation on the form seems to indicate that the correction was made on 12 March, 1948.) Age 91 yrs., 3 mos, 19 dys. Married. Wife Catherine Hilliard. Parents William Hilliard and Annie Davis, both shown as being born Ireland. The physician who signed the form was N. R. McIntyre of Burford. Informant Catherine Hilliard of RR1 Hatchley. She signed the form at Norwich. The funeral director was A. B. Arn and Son of Norwich. Burial was on January 28, 1948, at Bookton Cemetery, Bookton, which is in Windham Township of Norfolk County. Hatchley is in Burford Township. Norwich is in Oxford County. Bookton is in Norfolk County. None of the places mentioned in the above death registration are very far apartment. |
