| Note | She When the marriage registration for John Thede and Maria/Mary Feick was located, it was difficult to association it with Maria, the daughter of Valentine Feick Jr. and his wife Dorothea Damm. Mary's age is given as 29. We must believe this to be a clerical error, for this would suggest a year of birth closer to 1860. Census information placed Mary's year of birth closer to 1869. The clincher, however, is Mary's death registration which shows her married name to be Thede, her maiden name to be Feick, and, clearly, her parents as Valentine Feick and her mother's name (surname only given) as Domm. The second error to note has to do with the transcription of John and Mary's gravestone in Sanctuary Park Cemetery at Port Elgin. The Bruce-Grey branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society shows Mary's year of death as inscribed on the stone to be 1924, whereas Mary's death registration shows her year of death to be 1940. An examination of a photograph of the gravestone as it appears on Find-a-Grave shows the death of a daugher to be in 1924 and Mary's death to be in 1940. Clearly, the entry on the cemetery transcription is a mixup. Death reg. 0103189-40 Wiarton, Bruce Co. Mary Thede died on November 28, 1940, at Wiarton, Ontario, which was also her residence. Married. Born Ontario on November 13, 1868. Age 72 years and 15 days. Husband John C. Thede. Parents Valentine Feick and ... Domm, both born Germany. Physician Dr. Sydney Stott of Wiarton. Informant John C. Thede of Wiarton, husband. Burial at Port Elgin on December 1, 1940. |
