(Note that the Wellington District marriage register is not to be found on the MS248 series of reels at the Archives of Ontario. The Wellington District register was missing for a very long time. It was found in a bookstore by a woman who recognized what it was, purchased it with her own funds, and donated it to the Wellington County Museum in Fergus, Ontario. The museum placed it on microfilm and it is from this that Walker & Stratford-Devai made the available transcription.)

NoteHe Per the Wellington District marriage register, Johannes (John) and Elizabeth, were both resident in Wilmot Township at the time of their marriage in 1847. They were married in Preston, according to the marriage register, by Rev. Huttner who was the minister of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Preston, at the time, was in Waterloo Township of the same Wellington District. The townships of Wilmot and Waterloo were later townships of Waterloo County when the District system of governance was abolished and the county system established.

John and Elizabeth were still present in Wilmot Township as of the 1851 census for Canada West. By the time of the 1861 census, they were resident in Normanby Township of Grey County. With them in 1861 are, evidently, Elizabeth's parents, shown as Conrad Giess, age 57, and Magdalene Giess, age 64.
