Magdalena's marriage and death registration show her father as John Lanz. Her mother's maiden name was Gies or Gisso, or an approximation thereof. A marriage registration has not been found, but she was evidently born in Wilmot Township, which is in Waterloo County. Her death registration places her birth as Phillipsburg, or, rather more likely, near Phillipsburg, which is in Wilmot Township.

Magdalena was born in 1848, or at least an approximation thereof. A marriage registration for her parents has yet to be found. If indeed, they were married in Waterloo County in any of the townships north of Dumfries, then there were married in the Wellington District and these marriages do not appear on the MS248 series of microfilm reels. The original books and, hence, microfilm reels are to be found at the Wellington County Museum in Fergus. A transcription of these marriages has been examined as well as marriages of other districts without finding a marriage for John Lanz.

There was a post office at Phillipsburg from 1851 to 1915.

A liberty has been taken with the marriage registrations of the children of Magdalena. When these show Magdalena's maiden name - Lanz - the handwriting is such that the township clerk might be writing either Lanz or Lang. It is possible that the township clerk did indeed mean to enter her name as Lanz, but it may also be that there was a problem with the clergyman's handwriting. Mostly, it's difficult to tell, though the odd time it's obvious that Lanz was intended. Certainly, her maiden name was Lanz.
