Reive visited the Vineland Mennonite cemetery on 13 October, 1929. The transcription does not appear to be precise, but he did record this: Joseph Fretz, 1795-1870 Margaret, wife of Joseph, 1796-1832 Catherine, wife of Joseph, 1786-1835 Elizabeth, wife of Joseph, 1798-1800 Elizabeth's death year, 1800, is either a mistranscription or a typographical error. She died in 1880 and a death registration for her has been found. None of which tells us the maiden names, or, come to that, previous married names if such exist, for either Catherine or Elizabeth. The Niagara branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society published a 1984 transcription of the Vineland Mennonite Cemetery as done by Albert High. High numbered the graves and drew a map for this numbering. This describes the burial, in order, of the above names, Joseph thru Elizabeth, as numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9, in row H. This is transcribed as: Joseph, died March 23, 1870, age 74y., 5m., 28d. Margaret, died June 13, 1832, age 36y., 4m., 12d. Catherine, born Aug. 27, 1786, died Feb.5, 1835. Elizabeth, died March 30, 1880, age 82y. Elizabeth's age at date of death, March 30, 1880, on her death registration, is said to be 82 years and 21 days. Such evidence as we have indicates that Margaret Rittenhouse was the mother of all of Joseph's children. This is certainly stated to be such on page 75 of Volume 7 of the Annals of the Forty, The Grimsby Historical Society. Death reg. 03961-70 Louth Twp., Lincoln Co. Joseph Fretz died 23 March, 1870. Age 74 yrs., 5 mos., 28 dys. Farmer. Mennonite. Born Pennsylvania. Cause of death typhoid fever, five weeks. Physician and informant Jacob Walrath, Louth. |
