Rev. Ferguson. Wit. Henery Heygeyl, David Clemens, Cathrine Marten, and Isaac Master Abram and Lucinda were probably residents of Waterloo Township (as opposed to the village of Waterloo) at the time of their marriage. By the time of the 1851 census, they were inWilmot Township. The Wellington District marriage register is not to be found on the MS248 series of microfilm reels as recorded at the Archives of Ontario, but the lost register was found in a bookstore and purchased by the finder who recognized it for what it was and who then donated it to the Wellington County Museum at Fergus. The museum has it on microfilm and this was the source for the compilation of the abovebook, which is also to be found in digital format. |
| Marriage | She married Charles Cosens, son of Charles Cosens and Ann Goodchild, on 24 February 1858 at Oxford County. Before quoting this marriage registration, it should be said that it was poorly entered on the form. The parentage was entered out of alignment. The following is a bit of an interpretation, but, taking into consideration information provided by Ezra Eby in his 1895 biographies, the following should be correct. MS248 reel 12, Vol. 49, page 16 Oxford County Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Henry Reid, a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, for the year ending 31st December, A.D. 1858 Charles Cosens, 45, born England, residing Wilmot. Parents Charles and Ann Cosens. Lucinda Master, 35, born Canada, residing Wilmot. Parents David and Carolina. Witnesses John Emery of Wilmot and Stauffer Clemmens of Waterloo. On Feby 24, 1858. Lucinda was the widow of Abraham Master. Stauffer Clemens was Lucinda's brother-in-law. |
| Note | References to Lucinda's maiden name, Clemens, may be found in either of the two volumes of Ezra Eby's 1895-96 works, A Biographical History of Waterloo Township. Eby states that Lucinda's family spelled their name as Clemons. Lucinda's father may well have done, but this does not appear to be consistent in the records and the 'Clemens' spelling was the more regularly used, especially in later years. |
