Rhoda Woodruff

BirthRhoda Woodruff was born in September 1823 at Niagara Falls, Niagara County, New York.
MarriageShe married Joseph Southworth Perine on 24 October 1860 at Niagara Falls, Niagara County, New York.
For the moment, the best information available for the marriage of Joseph Perine and Rhoda is to be found in the 7 November, 1860, edition of the Dumfries Reformer of Galt. This tells that Mrs. R. C. Woodruff married J. S. Perine on October 24, 1860, at Niagara Falls, New York. The clergyman was Rev. Alex McColl. The groom was of Baden and the bride of Niagara.

Obviously, Woodruff is not Rhoda's maiden name. This remains to be found.

DeathShe died on 18 June 1878 at Waterloo Township, Waterloo Co., at age 54.
BurialShe was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Niagara Falls, New York.
NoteDeath reg. 014541-78 Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Co.
Rhoda C. Perine died June 18, 1878. Age 54 yrs and 9 months. Wife of J. S. Perine. Presbyterian. Born Niagara Falls, N.Y. Physician Dr. Lundy, M.D. Informant J. S. Perine, Manufacturer, Tp. Waterloo. Registered June 18, 1878. Registrar William Tilt.

Find-a-Grave shows that Rhoda is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls, New York. This appears also to show that her husband Joseph is buried with her.

A direct marriage registration has not been found. The 7 November, 1860, edition of the Dumfries Reformer, Galt, tells of the marriage of Joseph and Rhoda, referred to as Mrs. R. C. Woodruff, on 24 October, 1860, in Niagara Falls, New York, which was Rhoda's home town.

The U.S. 1850 census shows a Rhoda C. Woodruff with husband Richard in Niagara Town, Niagara County, New York. He is a merchant, age 30, born Canada, and she is age 23, born New York.

The U.S. 1860 census shows Rhoda Woodruff residing with Hannah Perine (Joseph's mother) in Niagara Town, Niagara County, New York. Note that the U.S. census wouldl have been a few months prior to October and Joseph and Rhoda were married.

Joseph and Rhoda with Harriet's son Robert are in Wilmot Township of Waterloo County as of the 1861 Canadian Census.

The 1871 census shows Joseph, Rhoda and Robert in Waterloo Township (almost certainly in Doon). Interestingly, with them is Sarah Smith, age 34, born U.S.

Per the death registration above, Rhoda died in 1878. The Niagara Falls Gazette makes mention of her passing in its June 19, 1878, edition.

Find-a-Grave shows her place of burial (as well as Joseph's) as being Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls, New York.

Nowhere in any of the information thus far found are we told Rhoda's maiden name. When she married Joseph, she was a Mrs. Woodruff and, therefore, obviously a widow.

Sarah Smith is with Rhoda and Joseph as of the 1871 census in Waterloo Township. Later found information mentions that Sarah's mother's given name is Rhoda. This very much has the look that Rhoda and Sarah/Sarai were sisters. This is unproven, but, for the moment, a good research bet.
