Sarai Smith, 43, spinster, Presbyterian. Born State of New York, residing Doon. Parents Christopher Smith and Rhoda D. C. Chambellin.
Witnesses A. Forester, Doon, and Mrs. M. A. Clark, May Falls, N.Y.
On October 15th, 1879, at Doon, by George Haigh, Presbyterian Clergyman.

Doon Presbyterian Church was a two-point charge with St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Hespeler. George Haigh was minister to this two point charge. He must have hung his hat in Hespeler, for that is where he returned the registration of marriage. There was a town clerk to receive such matters at Hespeler, but not at Doon. For Doon, typically the registration would have been filed with the clerk of Waterloo Township. That it was filed in Hespeler would under most circumstances be termed unusual, but Haigh probably did this regularly enough.

The bride's given name is shown as Sarai. The October 22 edition of the Niagara Falls Gazette (in Niagara Falls, New York) also carries a brief notice of the marriage. This shows her given name to be Sarai. See notes for Sarai.

BurialShe was buried on 9 June 1908 at Oakwood Cemetery, Niagara Falls, New York.

Sarah Smith Perine died June 6th, 1908. Age 72 years. Housewife. Widow. Born Niagara Falls, New York. Residence Niagara Falls, New York. Episcopal. Physician and informant J. H. Webb.
Registered on June 6, 1908.

Newspaper extracts of what follows are to be found via Old Fulton New York Postcards.

Webb reported Sarai's on the 6th of June as being on the 6th of June. The Niagara Falls (New York) Gazette edition of June 6th, 1908 (Saturday), reports news of her death occurring the previous night, Friday, and all logic suggests that this will be correct. For this reason her death is recorded here as occurring on the 5th of June, 1908.

Webb shows Sarai's given name as Sarah. He also shows her residence as Niagara Falls, New York. Later newspaper and census records rather more often record her name as Sarah, but Sarai does appear and is probably correct.

The 1850 U.S. Censes shows Sarah A. Smith, age 14, in her parents home. They are shown as Christopher M. Smith and his wife Rhoda.

The 1871 Canadian census shows Sarah Smith in the home of Joseph and Rhoda Perine. Is she Rhoda's sister?

The Wednesday, October 22, 1879, edition of the Niagara Falls Gazette reports the marriage of of Joseph S. Perine and Sarai Smith, daughter of the late C. A. Smith, at Doon, Ont., by Rev. Haigh.

The July 23, 1880, edition of the same newspaper reports the death at Doon, Ont., of Joseph S. Perine.

The 1892 census of the Town of Niagara records Sarah Perine at what was probably the Niagara Falls House.

The 1900 census at Niagara Town shows Sarai Perine as a boarder. She is with the people she was with in the 1892 census.

The 1901 Canadian census at Galt shows her as a guest in the home of Joseph and Lillian Fraser. Her date of birth is shown as June 11...year illegible. The 1900 census at Niagara Town shows her birth as being in June of 1836, and this works well with census information.

The 1905 census in Niagara Town has Sarai as a boarder in a hotel in Niagara Town.

Sarah died 5 June, 1908, in the Town of Waterloo in Ontario.

The front page of the Niagara Falls Gazette edition of 6 June, 1908, does carry a brief notice of her death.

The June 9, 1908, edition of the same paper covers her funeral of the same day at Saint Andrews (Episcopal) Church. This goes on to say that her remains were then removed to Oakwood Cemetery in Niagara Falls where her predecessors were buried. It goes on to say that she was a long time resident of the Niagara Falls House.
