Fretz, in his 1893 Wismer genealogy, tells that John Balthurst Burk and his wife Sarah Jane Wismer, were married on October 23, 1853. Fretz no doubt obtained this either directly from the couple or family members who kept a family bible. Marriage registrations with the civil authority for this era are hard comeby. Somewhere a church record may still exist that tells just where they were married. |

Fretz's paragraph for Sarah Jane tells that she was born in York County (quite probably in Markham Township) on April 13, 1838, and that she married John Balthurst Burk on October 23, 1853. Fretz's Wismer book, published in 1893, tells that at the time of writing, the Burk post address was Brougham, which is in Pickering Township of what was then Ontario County (now a part of the Durham Region.) John is described as being formerly a blacksmith, but by then a farmer, and that the couple were members of the Church of England. Death reg. 024727-13 Pickering Twp., Ontario Co. Sarah Jane Burk died August 10, 1913. Age 75 yrs., 4 mos. Born Ontario. Place of death lot 21, Concession 4. Widowed. Parents David Wismer and Mary Towman. Physician Dr. N. C. McKinnon. Informant W. Boyd Burk, Brougham. A place of burial for Sarah Jane has not been found. |
