Fretz, in his 1893 Wismer genealogy, tells that John Balthurst Burk and his wife Sarah Jane Wismer, were married on October 23, 1853. Fretz no doubt obtained this either directly from the couple or family members who kept a family bible. Marriage registrations with the civil authority for this era are hard comeby. Somewhere a church record may still exist that tells just where they were married. |

| Note | The 1861 census has the John and Sarah Burk living next to, or with, Sarah's parents. Their names are immediately followed by the family of Sarah's brother Philemon. This census shows John as age 34 as of his next birthday. Since the 1861 census was begun on 4 January, 1861, we must believe that his birthday was rather later the same year. This then calculates to a birth year of 1827 for John. The census tells that he was born in New Brunswick. His trade at the time is given as that of blacksmith. Sarah and John must have spent some time away from Markham after their marriage in 1853. With them is shown a son, age 3, born in Scarboro. According to Fretz, Eli died later that year. Eli is said to have had two younger sisters who died in infancy. The three Burk children are included below. This may assist in following the family's travels in these early years. A David and Mary Burk are found in the 1851 census in Pickering Township. They and their children were born in New Brunswick. They are probably John's family or at least a connection. The one difficulty here is that John and Mary have a son John listed in this census, but his age is such that he is calculated to have been born in 1830. Church of England. Physician and informant Dr. U. E. Bateson. All census information, at least some of which was probably given by John, tells that he was born in New Brunswick. Just where in New Brunswick, we do not know. |
