Lydia Nelson died Feb. 14, 1906, age 13. Residence Allan Twp. Child. Single. Presbyterian. Born Allan Township. Father Mr. J. Nelson. Cause of death La Grippe. Physician and informant Dr. Johnston.

First, it may be said that Lydia died on Manitoulin Island. Initially, the place of registration was entered as Manitoulin District, but then this was crossed out and Algoma District was written in. There seems to have been some back and forth between district names with these two designations during this era. Eventually, Manitoulin District seems to have been settled for.

Second, registrations were supposed to be filed in the registration area of the event, be it birth, marriage or death. At this time there does not appear to have been a registrar located in Allan Township and so the registration was filed with the Gordon Township registrar. Allan and Gordon share a common border and the Nelsons may well have shopped for needed supplies in Gore Bay. It wouldn't have been far away. It's a bit of a liberty, but Allan Township is shown here as the place of her passing.

Third, nowhere has a record been found of Lydia's burial, but Manitoulin Genealogy has some transcriptions of Gordon Cemetery and several of the family are buried there, her father in 1898 included. In all probability, this is where Lydia is buried as well.
