Parents Sylvanus Wrigley, born Scotland, and Isabella Stoddard, born New York, U.S.A. Physician Dr. Charlton. Informant Mrs. J. Wrigley, 14 Crescent, wife. Burial Mountview Cemetery, Sept 8th, 1934.

As mentioned in Joseph's death registration, he was born in 1850 and he was the son of Sylvanus Wrigley. The 1842 census of heads of households shows a Joseph Wrigley present on lot 24 of the 7th concession of Dumfries Township with William Dickson as the owner. This is the Dumfries Township of the old Gore District, not the divided North and South Dumfries townships of Waterloo and Brant counties. The 1862 Tremaine map of North Dumfries shows Sylvanus F. Wrigley on this this same concession, but the best interpretation is that he was on lot 30.

The 1842 census, as presented online by Familysearch is a bit of a mess. This as presented is how they received it from the Archives of Ontario. The first page has the top part torn off. Whatever the original heading might have read, the AO has chosen to entitle this census as that of St. David's Ward in Toronto. St. David's Ward in Toronto it definitely is not. It is that of Dumfries Township. This contains entitled lists of property holders in Paris and in Galt. Add to that, the names of Dumfries worthies appear all over the viewable imaging. By way of example, Admiral Nelson Vrooman appears. He was the founder of Harrisburg in what became South Dumfries. Other names may by readily identifiable to students of the history of Dumfries Township. The imaging does have other grief beyond the torn top of the first page. Pages toward the end of the imaging are badly mangled and much information is lost.

The Joseph Wrigley who appears in the 1842 Dumfries Township census does not appear later, or at least has not been found.. Was he the father of Sylvanus who in turn was the father of Joseph? Was young Joseph, the son of Sylvanus, the grandson of Joseph of 1842? Was he a brother? Had the 1842 census survived in good order, it's possible that more information relating to the family would have been found.
