Jane A. Dynes
ID # 9532, (1838-1921)
| Baptism | Jane A. Dynes was baptized on 28 March 1838 at Upper Canada. |
| Marriage | She married Thompson Sherwood on 27 February 1867 at Halton County. MS248 reel 7, Vol. 17, page 113 Halton County Marriage Register, 1858-1869 Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by William Willoughby, a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1867 Thompson Sherwood, 26, born Canada, residing Fergus. Parents John and Hannah Sherwood. Jane A. Dynes, 25, born Canada, residing Nelson (Township). Parents James and Eliza Dynes. Witness Wm. Hartop, Waterloo. On 27th Feby, 1867 County marriage registers do not usually tell of the exact locality wherein the marriage was conducted. Sometimes, especially if it were by license, it was simply held at the clergyman's residence. At this point of time, Rev. William Willoughby was located in Oakville. It's possible that the marriage was actually held there. A newspaper record of the marriage will sometimes - not always - give the location. |
| Death | She died on 17 October 1921 at Fergus, Wellington Co., Ontario, at age 83. |
| Burial | She was buried on 20 October 1921 at Sec. B4, Belsyde Cemetery, Fergus, Wellington Co.. |
| Note | Death reg. 031795-21 Fergus, Wellington Co. Jane Sherwood died October 17, 1921, age 84, widow. Born England March 28, 1838. Residence at place of death 37 years; residence in Ontario 60 yrs. Parents John and Jane Dynes, both born England. Physician A. Groves of Fergus. Informant John S. Sherwood of Fergus. Place of burial Fergus on October 20th. Thompson and Jane's marriage registration shows her parents as James and Eliza Dynes. This may be closer to being correct. Also, Jane's death registration places her birth in England. It is safe to say that this is incorrect. Every census record of Jane wherein she has been found places her birth in Canada, or Canada West. Given that she was born in 1838, or thereabouts, and since Canada West did not come into existence until February of 1841, it is reasonably safe to say that she was born in Upper Canada. There is some imperfect information to say that Jane was born in Nelson Township of the Gore District. In records apparently held by St. John's United Church of Oakville there is a baptism record for Jane Ann Dynes, of Nelson, born 26 March, 1838, baptized 23 December, 1838, daughter of James and Elizabeth Dynes. This record is to be found in Nelson Methodist Circuit Baptisms, 1832-1843. This has been transcribed by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai, and is found on page 130 of Vital Records of Upper Canada/Canada West, Vol. 2, part 1, Gore District, and published by Global Heritage Press, Milton, now of Ottawa. Going over a cemetery transcription as done by the Halton-Peel branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, it does appear that the story of Jane's parentage may be more complex, for there is a record of a James Dynes, possibly Jane's father, as being buried in Mount Vernon Cemetery, Nelson Township, with his second wife, Elizabeth Calvert. This lady died in or about the mid 1850s (the imprecision is not explained). There was also an Elizabeth Dynes, age 26, wife of James Dynes, buried in another lot. She is said to have died in 1838. There's evidently more to the story. |
