| Note | The available records provide us with some difficulty with names and dates for Schuyler and Elizabeth. First, for a son born to James Vrooman and Eliza Smith approximately 1842, the 1851 census in Garafraxa gives us his name as Erent. Thereafter, he appears as Schuyler. The logic of the situation is that Erent in 1851 and Schuyler in 1861 are one and the same person. Daughter Mary Ellen shows her father's name as Schuyler Sylvester. No doubt this is correct, for it has the appearance that Schuyler was named after her grandfather, Arents Schuyler Depeyster Sylvester Vrooman. To this point, we do not have evidence that Depeyester was one of young Schuyler's given names. Consistently, later censuses indicate a birth year for Schuyler of approximately 1841. Elizabeth was said to have been approximately two years older, though mileage varies. The transcription of their grave stones in New Hope Cemetery, section D, Hespeler/Cambridge, confuses the issue, for it presents their ages as some 10 years younger than they were. Considering their names and associations, we must accept that this is indeed Schuyler Vrooman, son of James Vrooman and Eliza Smith: Vrooman/ In loving memory of/Schuyler Vrooman/1851-1909/his wife/Elizabeth Near/1849-1914/Maria J. Vrooman/daughter/ 1870-1961/Mary Near grandmother/1817-1905/at rest The 1901 census at Hespeler leaves us with what is likely the most accurate record for the birth years for Schuyler and Elizabeth and these dates and years are shown here. Death reg. 009887-09 Hespeler, Waterloo Co. Schuyler Vrooman died December 23, 1909, born May 24, 1843. Place of death Galt General Hospital. Married. Father Schuyler Vrooman born Brantford Township; mother Elizabeth Near born Beverly Township. Informant Maria Vrooman, Hespeler, Ontario. Marie may have been confused with the questions on the form, for she seems to be reporting her own parents' names. As to whether Erent Schuyler Sylvester Vrooman was born in Brantford Township, we can't with certainty say, but Eliza Smith, Schuyler's mother, was certainly born in Beverly Township. |
