Information regarding the names of the children of John and Susanna, or Susan, comes from censuses taken in England. These documents provide ages, allowing calculation of approximate birth years, and places of birth.
John and Susan were married at Barnstaple in Devon in 1859. At the time of the 1861 census the family is at Shepton Mallet in Somerset. With them is daughter Susan, age 11 months, born at South Molton in Devon. Also with them is John Himes, age 14, and described as the brother-in-law of John Norman. John Norman is a 'master plasterer, employing 1 man and 3 boys'. John Himes is described as a plasterer's assistant. His birth place is given as Poplar, Middlesex.
By the time of the 1871 census, the family is at Witheridge in Devon and it is evident that daughter Susan is no longer with them. They have five others. By 1881, they have more children and, evidently the last, is Susan born in 1881, age 1 week. It is safe to say that the first Susan was deceased.
