Frederick Church

ID # 2628, (1870-1940)
FatherShadrack Church (1832-1927)
MotherRose Gooding (1839-1925)
BaptismFrederick Church was baptized on 26 May 1870 at Wentworth County.
MarriageHe married Mary Elizabeth Moss on 18 January 1899 at Ridgetown, Kent County.
The following marriage registration is, emminently, not very readable.

Mrge. reg. 008460-99 Ridgetown, Kent Co.
Fred Church, 28, bachelor, farmer. Methodist. Parents 'Stadick' and Rose.
Born Essex Co., residing 'Cotam'.
Lizzie Moss, 19, spinster, Methodist. Parents 'Unni and Bella. Born Wallacetown.
Witnesses: Emily Burdett and Nellie Story, both of Ridgetown.
On January 18, 1899, at Ridgetown, by C. Burdett.

The handwriting of the clerk is difficult, but it does appear that he had difficulty making out the clergyman's handwriting, at least in terms of the names of the fathers.

One witness was evidently a member of the clergyman's family. Looking at the 1901 census at Ridgetown and comparing the name of the witness that has been partly punched out for a binder prong, it's reasonable to say that her given name was Emily. The clergyman was Chaney Burdett.

The name of Lizzie's father on the registration is well written. Add to that, Fred and Lizzie had a son they named Unni.

DeathHe died on 22 April 1940 at Leamington, Essex Co., Ontario, at age 69.
BurialHe was buried on 24 April 1940 at Lakeview Cemetery, Leamington, Essex Co..
NoteCanGenWeb provides a photo of the stone for Fred and Elizabeth in Lakeview Cemetery, Leamington.

The handwriting on Fred's death registration is difficult to read.

Death reg. 014629-40 Leamington, Essex Co.
Fred Church died April 22, 1940, at his residence, Marlborough Street, Leamington. Widowed. Born Hamilton, Ontario, on May 26, 1870. Age 69 yrs., 10 mos., 20 dys. Retired. Widowed. Father's given name illegible. Mother's name shown as Susan Goodwin. Parents born England. Physician J. W. Turnbull of Leamington. Informant Ella McIntyre, Box 710, Leamington, daughter.
Burial Leamington, April 24, 1940.

The above death registration gives Hamilton as Fred's place of birth. This is entirely possible, though the 1871 census places the family in Saltfleet Township, Wentworth County. Since Hamilton is there as well, for the moment this tree shows Fred's place of birth as Wentworth County. The 1871 census shows Fred, age 3, born Canada. He appears to be the first child of Shadrack and Rose born in Canada.

If the 1871 census shows Fred's age (3) correctly, then it would be reasonable to believe he was born in 1868. The 1881 census, by this time in Gosfield North Township, Essex County, shows him as age 10. The 1891 census shows him as age 22. The 1901 census dates his birth to 25 May, 1870. His death registration, above, dates his birth to May 26, 1870. His gravestone in in Lakeview Cemetery, Leamington, per a transcription done by the Essex County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, simply shows his years of birth and death as 1870 and 1940.

As to his place of birth, the 1871 census places his birth in Ontario. The 1881 census places the births of the entire family in England - quite incorrect. The 1891 census places his birth in England. The 1901 census places his birth in Ontario. The 1911 and 1921 censuses place his birth in Ontario, and this will be correct.
