See a transcription dated 1991 done by the Niagara Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, publication nbr. 4663, for the cemetery of the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 3428 Portage Road, Niagara Falls, Ontario, page 4. Stone nbr. 66 In Memory / of / John Lemon / who died / 16th Jan. 1871 / aged / 69 years. It may be that Martha is buried with him, but there is nothing in the transcription to indicate if this is so. It's clear enough from census information that John Lemon who died in 1871 was married to Martha Heaton. Ontarian Families by Edward Marion Chadwick, Toronto, 1895, page 144, shows John Lemon as a Justice of the Peace for Stamford and a member of county council. John's death registration has him as a farmer. It may be that this was indeed what he did in later years. Records indicate that, as a Justice of the Peace, he did perform some marriages. |
