| Birth | Nelson Muma was born in 1846 at Dumfries Township, Gore District. |

MS248 reel 5, Vol. 1., page 194 Brant County Marriage Register Return of Marriages Solemnized by G. F. Patten, a minister of the Baptist Denomination for the year ending Dec. 31st, A.D., 1867. Nelson Muma, 21, born and residing S. Dumfries. Parents Michael Muma and Elizabeth Muma. Mary Ann Starr, 18, born and residing Beverly. Parents George and Charlotte Starr. Witnesses, Rachel Patten and Geo. A. Patten. On Nov 12, 1867. Per usual, the location of the marriage is not given, but given that the witnesses must have been members of the clergyman's family, it was likely held in St. George. |
| Note | At the time of the marriage of Nelson Muma and Mary Ann Starr, Nelson was apparently living in South Dumfries and farming. They are shown in South Dumfries at the time of the 1871 census. By the time of the 1881 census, they are in Burford Township, but we may say that they are there rather earlier. The 1874 birth registration of son Franklin, has him born in Burford Township. Add to this, McGill University has a web site for historic Ontario townships that includes attractive township maps with the names of property holders, but it also has an index. The map of Burford is not dated, though the index is dated 1875, and places Nelson 'Milma' in Burford as of the year of the 1875 gazetteer, which is probably the same date as the map. Son Sidney's birth registration shows their residence as lot 13 of the 2nd concession in Burford, and the map shows them on a 100 acres of this same lot, though this is actually a half lot. With Sidney's birth in 1874, we may say that they were in Burford at least that long, though by the time of the 1891 census, they are located in Turtle Mountain, Manitoba. What follows shows something of their census history. Nelson and Mary Ann Muma are in South Dumfries at the time of the 1871 census. With them are two children, George and Elizabeth, ages 2 and 1. In 1881, the couple are in Burford Township, Brant County and with them are five children. In 1891, the couple are in Turtle Mountain, Selkirk, Manitoba, and with them are seven children. In 1901, they are still in Turtle Mountain, though by this time Turtle Mountain is designated as being in Lisgar. By this time, only two of their younger children are with them. In the 1906, 1911 and 1916 prairie provinces censuses Mary Ann and Nelson are at Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan, and they are on their own. They are still in Qu'Appelle in 1921. |
