NoteEmma's gravestone in Sheffield Cemetery reads:

Emma Culham / died June 30 1872 / aged 31 yrs 24 dys / wife of Warner Babcock.

Death reg. 030158-72 Beverly Twp., Wentworth County
Emma Babcock died 30 June 1872, age 31. Wife of Warner Babcock. Born Beverley, Ontario, Canada. Cause of death puerperal peritonitis. Physician Dr. J. B. Lundy. Religious denomination of deceased United Brethren in Christ. Informant Warner Babcock, farmer, Beverley. Registrar W. McDonald, Beverley, Wentworth.

Considering the cause of Emma's death, there should be a record of the birth of a child for Emma or a record of the death of an infant. None appears in the Beverly Township records. There may be a record none the less with regard to a gravestone that sits next to Emma's.

It reads:

Margaret / died Sept. 25 1869 / aged 3 months / dau. of Warner & Emma Babcock / also their infant.

It's a guess, but the 'infant' mentioned at the bottom of this stone is probably the child to whom Emma gave birth in 1872. Warner probably didn't mention the child to Wallace would have recorded the child's death - or if the child was stillborn. In fact, it's quite possible that Warner reported the death of Emma by mail.

Also, and as an aside, recorded on the same page and immediately next to the death of Emma is the death of a child, Thomas William Tansley, age 3 years and 4 months. He is the son of David and Isabella Tansley. Isabella is also the mother of Warner Babcock by her first marriage.

In the face of such tragic events, the following will seem irrelevant, but from 1831 to 1857, the village of Delta in Leeds County was named Beverley. In early days of Beverly Township, Wentworth County, for some unknown reason, Wallace McDonald, the township registrar, spelled the name of the township as Beverley. Still fairly early on, he changed to the correct spelling of Beverly. Also, Wallace's handwriting in not too later years changed almost abruptly, likely due to some infirmity, to something at times very difficult to read. At the time of Emma's death, his handwriting was quite excellent and very readable. Also, though a seemingly small point, Wallace made an effort to clearly identify deceased persons, sometimes including the name of a spouse, as with Emma's registration, or the name of a parent or parents, as with the noted Tansley child. This was not called for on death registration forms in early days, though it was certainly a requirement in later years. Wallace McDonald evidently did this from early days and probably had some foresight in the matter.
