This is Volume A and it has an index. Peter's name is indexed as Master. The index entry is shown as Peter Master to Jane Augusta Hatch. This leads us to page 704, which reads:

NoteHe One source of information for the family of Peter Marter, physician, Brantford, is the 1851 census. This lists Peter and Jane and six children. Another is The Medical Profession in Upper Canada, 1783-1850, written in 1894 by William Canniff and published in Toronto by William Briggs. The biographical sketch appears on pages 506 and 507 of this work. This names Peter's father as Thomas Peter Marter of London, England. This work also tells us that Augusta was the daughter of the Hon. Harris Hatch of St. Andrews, New Brunswick.

The biographical sketch tells that Peter and Jane Augusta married in 1833 and then came to Brantford in Upper Canada. Just when they located to Brantford isn't told, but according to baptism records they were present in Brantford in the 1840s and probably earlier. The sketch tells that they remained in Brantford until 1858 when they moved to Nova Scotia 'where they lived but a year or two.' They then returned to Brantford where Peter Marter died in February of 1862.

A note here: The family has not been found in the Canadian 1861 census nor has it been found in the 1860 U.S. census. If the above story of the family spending some time in Nova Scotia is correct, then it may be that at the time of the 1861 census they were in the process of returning to Brantford. The Dumfries Reformer informs us that Peter Marter died in Brantford in 1862 and he is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Brantford. The original microfilm reels have not been consulted. Rather, they have been examined as they appear on Ancestry. Also available is a transcription of the 1861 census for Brant County as done by the Brant County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. The name Marter, or any variation of the name, does not appear in this document.

The list of children as it appears in the Upper Canada book agrees with the 1851 census as it was enumerated in Brantford. It is possible to say that there was one other daughter, Josephine, who was born in January of 1849, or possibly December of 1848. She was baptized at Grace Anglican Church in Brantford on the 28th of July, 1849, and was buried five days later on the 2nd of August

For the little we know of Josephine and a list of baptisms for some other children we refer to Vital Records of Upper Canada/Canada West, Volume 2: Part 2, Gore District, 1824-1869, compiled by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai, Global Heritage Press, 2005.

This is an excellent work, but does take some creative reading for the reason that where the name Marter appears it has been transcribed as Martin. This will no doubt be a handwriting issue. Where Grace Anglican Church baptisms and burials appear they are extracted from this work.

Rosemary Ambrose transcribed death notices for the period of 1860-65 from The Dumfries Reformer of Galt. This includes an extraction from the Reformer edition of 12 February, 1862. This records the death in Brantford of Peter Marter, in his 53rd year, on 4 February, 1862.

The burial of Dr. Peter 'Martin' as transcribed from Grace Anglican's burial records dates his burial to 6 Feb. 1862, age 54, of throat cancer. A transcription of Greenwood Cemetery provided by the Brant County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society locates his burial there. This is not mentioned in the Grace Anglican record. No doubt a clergyman from Grace Anglican conducted the service.
