NoteHere is the sketch of Stephen Harvie, father of Margaret, as it appears on page 664 in The History of the County of Brant, 1883, Warner & Beers:

STEPHEN HARVIE, proprietor of the only flouring mill in Glenmorris, is a native of Scotland, where he was born 27th Oct., 1829, and is the son son of John and Mary Bell Harvie, also natives of Scotland, where they were married. The father, who has been a road surveyor for the greater part of his life, died in 1870, and the mother in 1844. Stephen Harvie, of whom this sketch is intended, was united in marriage in Canada, 4th July, 1854, with Minnie Nichol, born in Scotland, 17th July, 1827, and daughter of Thomas Nichol. Stephen emigrated from Scotland to Brantford in 1848, and has spent the most of his days in Brant County. The mill he owns was built about 25 years ago, and he took possession of it in 1869, previous to which Mr. Fleming was proprietor. Mr. Harvie has done well in the milling operations since he commenced, and, besides doing a good country trade, exports largely to the European markets, which have been his principal seat of trade for the past ten years. Mr. and Mrs. Harvie, who are adherents of the Presbyterian Church, have a family of two children- Margaret, wife of A. Buchanan, and Mary, single. Mr. Harvie was member for South Dumfries Township for one year.

In spite of the above, Stephen and Minnie probably first settled in the village of Rockwood in Eramosa Township in Wellington County, for they were there at the time of the 1861 census and Margaret stated in her marriage registration that she was born there. Stephen is shown as a miller in this census (the family name is spelled here as Harvey), though the occupation 'miller' is written in beside the name of their two year old daughter.

At first glance, noticing that Alex's wife Margaret was a Harvie, it might be thought that she was a cousin, for Alex's mother was a Harvie. From the above vignette, however, this does not appear to be the case. Stephen Harvie, the father of Margaret, came much later to the township. It would be easy to speculate that the reason he came to Dumfries Township was that he already had Harvie cousins living there, but there is no evidence to support that.

When Alex and Margaret moved to Pontiac, Michigan, they took Margaret's parents with them, for they were in advanced age.

In the 1920 U.S. census taken at Pontiac, Alex and Margaret are listed, along with her sister Mary and brother-in-law George Fleming. Margaret and Mary's father Stephen, age 90, is also with them. By the 1930 census, Alex has died. Margaret is there with her sister Mary and Mary's husband. All are said to have been born in Canada and their parents all born in Scotland. Stephen is gone by this time as well. Mary's age is given as 70, George's as 67, and Mary as 66.

There is no indication in either the bible or the 1920 or 1930 census that either Alex and Margaret or the Flemings had children.

In the 1910 Pontiac census, the Flemings are not with them, but both Stephen and Minnie are. Stephen and Minnie are said to be 82 and 84. Alex is said to be a carpenter and house builder.

We have but a transcription of Margaret Harvie Buchanan's death registration. She died on 11 June, 1946, at Pontiac.
