William Buchanan
ID # 4182, (1826-1905)
| Father | Alexander Buchanan (1796-1888) |
| Mother | Elizabeth Leece (1802-1841) |
| Baptism | William Buchanan was baptized on 3 September 1826 at Galt, Upper Canada. |
| Baptism | He was baptized on 5 November 1834 at First Church, Galt. |
| Marriage | He married Catharine Harvie, daughter of Alexander Harvie and Catharine Campbell, on 8 December 1853 at Beverly Township, Wentworth Co., Canada West. The following marriage record is transcribed from microfilm LCM-30, found at the United Church of Canada archives: By licence in Beverly Dec. 8, 1853 William Buchanan, Blenheim Tp Catherine Harvey, Beverly Tp Witnesses Alex Buchanan jr., John Harvie The date of the marriage as it appears on the page is ambiguous for it's difficult to say whether it referred to the marriage of William and Catherine or to the previous record. The family bible, however, confirms the marriage date of December 8, 1853. The marriage was performed by Rev. Strang. Since the marriage was performed in Beverly, it's very likely that it was held at the home of the bride's parents who were resident in Beverly at the time. Rev. Strang was the minister at First Church (Presbyterian) in Galt. |
| Death | He died on 21 March 1905 at Galt, Ontario, at age 78. |
| Burial | He was buried at Section 2, Mountview Cemetery, Galt. |
| Note | Beginning with William, many of the dates for births, marriages and deaths are taken from the bible of William Buchanan (Jr.) and his wife Elizabeth Sowden, though census information and registrations at the Archives of Ontario have been consulted as well. Baptism information for William Buchanan and several siblings is taken from microfilm LCM-30, First United Church Records, Baptisms 1833-1852. The Buchanan siblings appear to have been baptised at First Church in Galt, at the time a Presbyterian Church, in two batches. Four were baptised on November 5th, 1834, and five on November 19th, though the date in the margin is almost obscure. This appears on microfilm LCM-30 which is to be found at the United Church of Canada Archives. (A perpetual calendar shows both of these dates as a Wednesday.) At the time of the 1891 census, William and Catherine are at Galt. William is listed as a farmer, though by this time he is retired. Harvie and Will are still on the farm. William and Catherine had a stone house at the corner of Chisholm and Bruce streets in Galt. The house faced onto Bruce. At the time of the census, their daughter Catherine was still with them as well as Wash and Dan. Dan is 23 (though the writing looks like 28) and Wash is 20. They are still both in school. Wash became a dentist and Dan a doctor. Wash set up practice in St. Catharines and Dan in Galt. The children of William and Catharine were born in Blenheim Township in Oxford County, with the exception of their youngest son Washington who was born in Glen Morris in South Dumfries Township of Brant County. Some of the records show Washington as their place of birth. The village of Washington is in Blenheim Township and the Buchanan farm was close enough to the village that lots were sold off from the farm and became part of the village. And the reason their youngest son was named Washington? He was the only one not born at Washington. The Buchanans were Presbyterians and the family had its start with First Church in Galt. When they moved to Glen Morris, they attended the Glen Morris Presbyterian church. But devout Presbyterians or not, the caution to watch what you say follows us all. One year at harvest time a young woman came up from the village to help around the house. John and Dan were home and helping with the harvest and the work went on to well after dark. The young woman went out on the porch and noticed quite a large bonfire down in the orchard. One of the brothers came into the house and she asked him what was happening. His response? Oh, that's just John and Dan. They're rendering down a corpse so they will have the skeleton for their medical practice! We must believe this to be a jest, but an owner of the property back in the 1970s told the story and he said it was still a current source of a chuckle in the village at that time. This perhaps 90 years after the fact. |
