| Note | Mary was the daughter of Andrew Park and Mary Sibbald. We find her at age 8 in the 1871 census in Bentinck Township, Grey County, with her parents and siblings. She is shown as Mary S. Park. Her parents and two older brothers are shown as being born in Scotland. Her parents are in Bentinck Township as of the 1851 census, they and their two first born being born in Scotland. The 1851, 1861, and 1871 censuses are consistent on this point. Indeed, their 3rd born, Janet, her age in 1851 given as age 2, is shown as being born in Bentinck, Canada West. Since the 1851 census was taken in January of 1852, and the age question was: What is your age as of your next birth, we may place Janet's birth in 1850. Her older brother Andrew, age 4, is consistently reported as being born in Scotland, so we may approximate the arrival of the family in Canada to between 1848 and 1850. The Canadian County Atlas Digital Project, McGill University, extracts from an 1880 atlas the information that Andrew Park was located on III Sideroad, lot 51. This is not far from the village of Durham and on the Saugeen River. (The eastern quarter of the township is a separate survey and probably represents the hilly country to be found in the area.) The only other comment to be made here is that at least two Ontario marriage registrations for Mary's siblings provide the maiden name of Mary's mother as Sibbald. The practice of passing along such as a middle name for a child was not uncommon. Hence Mary's full name as Mary Sibbald Park. Mary, age 18, is still with her parents in Bentinck Township, however she married William Enoch Cornell in Ivanhoe, Manitoba, in 1883. We have no direct information as to why she journied to Manitoba, but the 1891 census in Broadview, Eastern Assiniboia, shows an Archie Park, age 44, in the previous household and he is probably Mary's oldest brother. |
