Henry Putman

ID # 6429, (1829-1897)
FatherJacob Putman (1796-)
MotherRebecca Young (1802-)
BaptismHenry Putman was baptized in 1829 at Bertie Township, Niagara District.
MarriageHe married Elizabeth Buey, daughter of John Buey and Katherine Osterhout.
A marriage registration for Henry Putman and Elizabeth Buey has not been found. The Buey family was apparently in the Lewiston, New York, area, just across the Niagara River, by the time Henry and Andrew Putman married sisters Elizabeth and Sarah. Mary Buey, Elizabeth and Sarah's sister, was evidently back in Niagara Township by 1880, for she married Jacob Putman, the brother of Henry and Andrew, who had been widowed some five years.

DeathHe died on 28 December 1897 at Niagara Township, Lincoln Co..
BurialHe was buried at St. Mark's Anglican Cemetery, Niagara Town.
NoteA general note to do with the family of Henry Putman and Elizabeth Buey. Census information shows them to be, in their married years, Wesleyan Methodists. For several of their children, records of baptism have been found. Not all Wesleyan Methodist clergy seemed to return baptism information to the church's central repository, but a number did. This probably explains why baptism records have been found for some of the children of Henry and Elizabeth and not for others.

An exellent source for this information is to be found via the website
bowevergenealogy.ca/resources/methodist

This includes an indexed list of names of the children as well as links to the images of the pages where the names were entered. Usually, there is some order to the sequence where the names of children were entered. A page identified as 302, Township of Niagara, has several of the children's names, only two of which are shown together, but which, at first glance, are all over the decades. A closer examination shows that the entries were made based on the returns of individual clergy, but, even with this, there seems no order of sequence.

Death reg. 015413-98 Niagara Twp., Lincoln Co.
Henry Putman died Dec. 28, 1897. Age 69. Residence lot 61, 2nd concession. Farmer. Methodist. Born Fort Erie. Physician Dr. Trimble. Informant Samuel Sheppard.

That Henry was born in Fort Erie may be correct. Near Fort Erie might be closer to it. Fort Erie is in what was the historic township of Bertie. Henry's father Jacob Putman of Bertie Township petitioned the crown for land in 1822. It may be that the family was still in Bertie Township when Henry was born in 1829. Brother Andrew, born in 1836, was said to be born in Niagara Township so the family was probably was still resident in Bertie at the time of Henry's birth.
