Lincoln County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. James Shaw, a minister of the Canadian Wesleyan Methodist New Connexion Church

John Anderson, 25, born and residing South Dumfries. Parents Daniel and Christie.
Adaline Pickard, 24, born Niagara, residing St. Catharines. Parents Nicholas and Minerva.
Witness Eli Gregory, residence Lincoln.
On March 14th, 1861.

The handwriting on the above registration is mostly readable. 'Minerva', the name of Adaline's mother, is difficult to read, but seems the best interpretation.

The residence of the witness, Eli Gregory, is only shown as Lincoln County. Actually, there is an Eli Gregory in Louth Township of Lincoln County in the 1861 census. He is a farmer and, apparently, a member of the Methodist New Connexion church.

DeathShe died on 26 October 1876.
BurialShe was buried at Maus Cemetery, South Dumfries Twp., Brant Co..
NoteShe Adaline, on her marriage registration, shows her father as Nicholas Pickard. He may be the Nicholas William Pickard who was the son of Benjamin Pickard. Benjamin was age 13 as of 30 November, 1783, when he was shown as a drummer in Capt. Bernard Frey's Company in the Corps of Rangers at Niagara (Butler's Rangers). The relationship is unproven and requires research. For something of this, see page 3 of Early Ontario Settlers, A source Book, Norman K. Crowder, 1993, Genealogical Publishing Company.

Some sources tell that old Benjamin Pickard lived to be 101 and died at Canning 'near Paris' in 1857. This also needs some research, for, if indeed Benjamin was age 13 in 1783, then his birth year of 1770. If this is correct, they he would not have been 101 until 1871.

The Troy Daily Times of Troy, NY, in their edition of Thursday afternoon, August 13, 1857, shows Benjamin's death at Paris, Canada, 'last week', at age 101. The Brantford Semi Weekly Expositor of 31 July, 1857, has a death notice for Benjamin. This places his death at Canning, 'near Paris', at age 101. The Troy paper may be at some level quoting this. The Brantford paper states that Benjamin lived for many years in Niagara Township and had been a Wesleyan Methodist for the past 60 years.

Canning is in Blenheim Township of Oxford County. Paris is in South Dumfries of Brant County. Blenheim and South Dumfries are adjacent. Benjamin probably went to Canning to live with a family member in his old age. An 1828 census places a Benjamin Pickard (probably Benjamin Jr.) in Louth Township. Adaline's marriage registration shows an Eli Gregory as witness, residence Lincoln (county). The 1861 census places Eli in Louth. This is not at all far from St. Catharines where Adeline was said to be resident at the time of her marriage.

If nothing else, the above provides a couple of leads for a descendant to follow.

Adeline is buried in Maus Cemeter with her husband, his parents, and John's second wife. A death registration for her has not been found, though her gravestone dates her death to October 26, 1876. This is provided by a transcription of the cemetery as done by the Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. An obituary for Adeline has been sought, but not found.
