Elgin County Marriage Register, 1865-1869

Extracted from a list of marriages that were solemnized under the headings of Reverends W. C. Watson and W. F. Morrison, both Wesleyan Methodist ministers. The actual marriage of Elijah and Sarah is recorded as being done by W. C. Watson. This for the year ending 31st December, A.D. 1866

Elijah Brown, 25, born Walsingham, residing Dereham. Parents Abraham and Clarissa Brown.
Sarah McDonald, 22, born Whitby, residing Dereham. Parents Wm. and Amanda McDowell.
Witnesses Jas. McDowell and Josiah Mahoney, both of Dereham.
On March 29, 1866.

Some index information places the marriage in Leeds & Grenville, which disregard.

Elijah's place of birth, Walsingham, presumed to be Walsingham Township, is in present day Norfolk County. Sarah's place of birth, Whitby, per her Wesleyan Methodist baptism record, is actually Whitby Township.

Clergy in the early days were often circuit riders. It isn't always certain that where they reported a marriage, in this case Elgin County, was where it was actually performed, but by 1866 in all probability that marriage was in Elgin County, as reported. The only glitch to that thought is that the bride, groom, and the witnesses, were residents of Dereham Township which was in Oxford County.

DeathShe died on 19 May 1869 at age 26.
BurialShe was buried at Old Delmer Cemetery, Dereham Cemetery, Oxford Co..
NoteThe marriage registration of Sarah McDowell places her birth in Whitby. This was almost certainly Whitby Township if for no other reason than that the page in the Wesleyan Methodist Baptisms that records Sarah's baptism is headed Whitby Township.

An obituary for William McDowell, Sarah's father, states that the family left Whitby in 1849 and settled in Dereham Township. The family appears in Dereham Township in the 1851 census.

The year of the date of Sarah's birth is poorly written on her baptismal record. It may be 1843 or 1844. Her age at appears on census pages is open to interpretation. 1843 is shown in this tree for her year of birth and may not be quite correct, but probably works with her age as of the 1851 census.

Sarah died in May of 1869 and Elijah Brown and Hannah Jane Husband were married in February of 1870. They appear in Dereham Township in the 1871 census with daughter Alice who was born in December of 1870. No evidence has been found of a surviving child of Sarah's.
