NoteThe family of William and Amanda appear in Dereham Township in the 1851 census, begun in January of 1852. It appears that their presence there, at the time, was of short duration. For the following, see Volume 4 of Rev. Donald McKenzie's work Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1861-1870, Global Heritage Press, Milton (now of Ottawa). This is available in print or PDF format.

Page 234 has an obituary for William McDowell. This appears in the Christian Guardian edition of February 12, 1868, on page 28.

This tells that William was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1791. He is said to have converted to Methodism at age 30 and to have emigrated to America the same year. He is said to have settled in New York State and then moved to Canada in 1832, settling in Whitby Township. He became a licensed local preacher in 1835. In 1849 he is said to have moved to Dereham where he died on July 16, 1867, and was survived by his wife and children.

Robert Hamilton McDowell, apparently the firstborn son of William and Amanda, married in 1893. He was apparently the one child born in the United States prior to the family's move to Canada. On his marriage registration he shows his place of birth as Madrid, St. Lawrence County, New York.

Based on this, the 1830 census for Madrid was checked and a William 'McDoell' is found there. The death registration for son Harvey McDowell shows his mother's maiden name as Scott, Amanda Scott. Of some interest here is that in this same census, the household enumerated next to that of William McDowell is that of Ichabod Scott. See notes for Amanda.
