Amanda McDowell died Decr 4, 1890. Age 87. Methodist. Born Co. St. Laurence, N.Y. Physician Dr. Minshall. Informant John H. Hughes.

An obituary for Amanda appears in the Christian Guardian edition of March, 1891, page 139. This is quoted by Rev. Donald McKenzie in his work, Vol. 11, Obituaries from the Christian Guardian, 1891-1895. This was published by Global Heritage Press, Milton (now of Ottawa) in 2011 and is available from them in print or PDF format. See page 263.

This tells that Mrs. Amanda McDowell was born in the United States of Puritan parentage, but spent most of her life in Canada. It tells that she died in Delmer on the Brownsville Circuit, in Dereham Township and that she was buried near her late husband and other family members.

There are two local cemeteries at Delmer - Old Delmer and New Delmer. New Delmer was established in 1910. Old Delmer Cemetery was established in 1846 and since William McDowell died in 1867 and since there is a considerable representation of the McDowell family buried there, we must believe that William and Amanda are buried in Old Delmer.

The Oxford County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has done a transcription of the two Delmers, neither of which have yet been examined. See however the website Cemeteries in the County of Oxford which has a great array of photographs of gravestones in Oxford and this does not show any McDowells buried in New Delmer.

The Christian Guardian obituary is uninformative as to Amanda's maiden name. Marriage registrations of her children have been sought, but her maiden name has not yet been found in these. Son Harvey's death registration finally provides us with the name of Scott for Amanda.

As mentioned under the notes for Amanda's husband William, there appears in the 1830 enumeration for Madrid in St. Lawrence County, New York, the name of a William McDoell, or McDowell. Next door is the household of an Ichabod Scott. This could be entirely coincidental, however we have a bit more to work with.

The 1850 U.S. census at Madrid shows an Ichabod H. Scott, age 70, farmer, born in Ct. - Connecticut. With him is wife Sarah, age 69, also born Connecticut.

Then in the 1860 U.S. census at Waddington, St. Lawrence County, we find Ichabod H. Scott, age 80, farmer, born Vermont, with wife Sarah, age 80, born Connecticut. They are with a Samuel Scott, age 36, farmer, born New York, and his family. Samuel has a daughter, Amanda, age 9. This does seem to take us a step past coincidence. Perhaps more definitive evidence will be found.
