Home District Marriage Register

Nbr. 48
Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by E. L. Koyt in the Home District, Province of Canada, for the year ending Oct. 9, 1849.

On November 27, 1849, Johnson Champler Kid(d) and Mariah Winch, both of the Township of East Gwillimbury. By Banns.
Witnesses George Mann and Solomon Harrison.

Information for the clergyman, Ephraim Lillie Koyt, is sparse. He was apparently a Methodist Episcopal minister. No record has been found for him in either Canadian or U.S. censuses. No burial record has been found for him. The background for Episcopal Methodism was American, as opposed to Wesleyan Methodism which was of English background.

Based mostly on later census information, the Kidd family's religious affiliation was that of Wesleyan Methodist.

MarriageHe married Catharine O'Donnell on 27 September 1865 at Wellington County.

The clergyman, Chas. E. Thompson, according to census information, was a minister of the Church of England.

DeathHe died on 27 December 1910 at Listowel, Perth Co., Ontario, at age 81.
NoteHe Johnson's date of birth is shown on the 1901 census at Listowel as being December 30, 1828. His death registration dates his birth to December 20, 1828. His baptism date (see below) was January 4, 1829. This is a transcription only. The image is not available. His place of baptism is shown as Seamer, near Scarborough, York, in England. This is the same place of baptism for his known siblings and may be their place of birth as well, although this isn't certain.

Ancestry has a database (transcription only) England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975. This shows:

Johnson Champley Kidd
Baptism date 4 Jan 1829, baptism place Seamer Near Scarborough, York, England.
Father Richard Kidd, mother Jane.

FHL Film Number:919209

The transcription of the above record does show Johnson's middle name to be Champley. His two marriage registrations, however, show his middle name as Champler and these images are available and clearly enough written.

Johnson's baptism record shows his parents as Richard and Jane. His death registration shows his father as William. Richard will be correct. Johnson's second marriage was in 1865. This was during the era of county registrations and this clearly shows his parents as Richard and Jane. Johnson's first marriage registration, recording his marriage to Maria Winch, was during the district era and this did not show parental names.

The 1851 census shows Johnson and Maria in Maryborough Township of Wellington County. On the same page appear couples that were of the Kidd and Winch families. Maria's father may have been a Samuel Winch, age 55, and who appears on this same page as Maria and Johnson.

The 1861 census has Johnson and Maria in Peel Township of Wellington County. With them are listed five children.

The 1871 census has Johnson in Listowel. With him is his second wife Catharine. Seven children are present and we must believe them all to be Maria's.

By the time of the 1881 census, Johnson is in the town of Harriston in Wellington County. His wife's name is shown as Mary. It may well be correct in the sense that many people had two given names. Also with them is shown as a daughter is Julia, age 23. That Julia is a daughter is probably incorrect.

Johnson and Catherine are in Normanby Township of Grey County as of the 1891 census.

Johnson and Catherine are back in Listowel as of the 1901 census. Catherine's name is entered as M. Catherine, which may account for her name appearing as Mary in the 1881 census.

Death reg. 024594-10 Listowel, Perth Co.
Johnson C. Kidd died December 27th, 1910, age 80 yrs. Born Canada (?)
Born December 20th, 1828. Place of death Listowel. Gentleman (retired). Married. Father William Kidd(?), born Ireland(?). Mothers name unknown, but born Ireland(?). Physician A. H. Nichol. Informant A. H. Hamilton, Listowel.

The informant, A. H. Hamilton, was evidently the undertaker.

Johnson was definitely not born in Canada. His date of birth may or may not have been December 20th. His father was Richard Kidd, not William, and the family came from England. This does not completely rule out an Irish connection, but it's most unlikely and contrary to such information that we do have.
