NoteHe A marriage record for Richard Kidd and Jane Salton in England has been found as well as baptism records for their known children. All of these have been found on Ancestry and all are in the form of transcriptions. In other words, images of these records have not been found and we do not have the liberty of making our own interpretation of such things as handwriting.

All the baptisms were done at Seamer, near Scarborough, in Yorkshire. The family probably lived there as well. While this isn't always certain, when Mary Kidd Lester died in 1885, her place of birth was stated to be 'Seymour', England. With this in mind, while this tree shows the place of birth to be Yorkshire, probably Seamer, rather more specific, is correct.

Canadian information for the family's early years in the country is more difficult to come by. The 1901 census at Listowel states that Johnson Kidd came to Canada in 1831. This same 1901 census page tells that Johnson was born on 30 Dec, 1828.

When Richard and Jane's eldest child, Mary, was married in 1831 she was said to be resident in Etobicoke (township). Richard and Jane are buried in Etobicoke and so at least the parents were resident there, perhaps for the remainder of their lives.

There are questions we might raise - one being that with several of his family still quite young did Richard Kidd remarry after Jane's death in 1831? This we do not know and finding out would depend on a church record or a newspaper notice. The Home District does have marriage registrations for the era, but the couple appear to have been Anglican. The Anglican Church was one of two 'official' churches in these early days (Anglican and Roman Catholic) and the clergy of these churches were not required to submit marriage records to the district's registrar.

Richard and Jane are buried together in St. Philip's Churchyard, Weston (Etobicoke). This is based on the transcription of the cemetery as done by the Toronto branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society. The transcription (actually transcriptions) go back to as early as 1976. Another was done in 1991-92. The transcription as shown tells that the (original) stone was flat and broken.

Richard's inscription reads:

In Memory of Richard Kidd who died July 10, 1841, age 54 yrs., 10 mos., 23 days.

Jane's reads Jane his wife died October 3, 1831, age 41 yrs, 11 mos., 2 days.

With them is their son William who died October 3, 1831, age 20 yrs., 9 mos., 6 days.

Their dates of birth are calculated from their ages as shown. The results may be approximate.

St. Philip's Churchyard Cemetery is Anglican.

It should be said that Find-a-Grave shows an attractive and obviously recently erected gravestone for Richard, Jane and son William. Jane's maiden name is given as Solton. This may be correct, though the transcription of their marriage shows her name as Salton. The recently erected stone must surely be of family origin. The only words added to that which the transcription indicates appeared on the original stone are: Natives of Yorkshire.
