Koyt in the Home District, Province of Canada, for the year ending Oct. 9, 1849. On November 27, 1849, Johnson Champler Kid(d) and Mariah Winch, both of the Township of East Gwillimbury. By Banns. Witnesses George Mann and Solomon Harrison. Information for the clergyman, Ephraim Lillie Koyt, is sparse. He was apparently a Methodist Episcopal minister. No record has been found for him in either Canadian or U.S. censuses. No burial record has been found for him. The background for Episcopal Methodism was American, as opposed to Wesleyan Methodism which was of English background. Based mostly on later census information, the Kidd family's religious affiliation was that of Wesleyan Methodist. |

| Note | For the following, see Volume 4, Obituaries from Ontario's Christian Guardian, 1861 to 1870, Rev. Donald A. McKenzie, Global Heritage Press, 2011, Milton, (now of Ottawa), page 185. This quotes an obituary from page 88 of the Guardian's May 31st, 1865, edition, and tells that Mrs. Maria Kidd was born in East Gwillimbury and that she was converted (to Wesleyan Methodism) in Maryborough in October of 1861, and that she died of consumption (tuberculosis) at Glen Allen on the Peel Circuit on April 8, 1865 age age 35. She was said to be survived by her husband and 7 children. The family is clearly Wesleyan Methodist at the time of the recording of the 1861 census which was begun on 4th of January of the year, so the time frame for Maria's conversion to Wesleyan Methodism is probably not quite accurate. Glen Allen is in Peel Township of Wellington County. Maryborough is a township of Wellington County. The Peel circuit will refer to a church charge, but Glen Allen is clearly in Peel Township. The Guelph branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has a transcription of Spring Hill Methodist Cemetery which is located on the 4th concession of Peel Township. Page 3 of this transcription records the inscription on Maria's gravestone. This tells that she died on April 8th, 1865 (as shown above), at the age of 35 years and 3 days. Her date of birth is calculated from this. It's possible that it's approximate. Recorded on the same stone is the name of her daughter Peregrine who died on April 17, 1864, age the age of 2 months and 21 days. This is the only record of Peregrine so far found. Johnson and Maria had a son in 1859 whom they named Garbutt. It's perhaps of interest that buried next to Maria is a Rev. Thomas Garbutt who died on March 19, 1869. Neither the Guardian obituary or the gravestone inscription tell Maria's maiden name, which was Winch. Her marriage registration (just readable) shows her name as Winch. Son William's 1873 marriage registration shows his mother's maiden name as Winch. Son Richard's 1897 marriage registration shows his mother's maiden name as Winch. Son William's 1913 death registration shows his mother's maiden name as Winch. It is difficult to find family background information from this early era that tells us much of anything about the Winch family. Hence, we have no information as to her parentage. |
