Daniel Joseph Kenney

      Daniel Joseph Kenney was born on 15 October 1848 in Ireland.1,2 He was the son of Patrick Kenney and Mary O'Neill.3 He immigrated to South Crosby Twp, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario, with his parents Patrick Kenney and Mary O'Neill about 1849.4 He was confirmed by the Archibishop of Toronto on 20 October 1874 in Philipsville Catholic Church, Philipsville, Leeds & Grenville County, OntarioG.5 Daniel is described as a boatman on the 1881 census. It was common for men from South Crosby to work the steamboats on the Rideau Canal and the St Lawrence River during the summer months.6,7 He married Ellen Doyle, daughter of Michael Doyle and Elizabeth Mary Dunn, on 30 January 1882 in Philipsville, Leeds & Grenville County, Ontario.2,8 Daniel was listed as farming at the time of the 1891 and 1901 censuses, however, most of his working life was spent on the water first as a deck hand and eventually as a captain on the Rideau Canal and Lake Ontario. He was left a widower when Ellen Doyle died on 3 May 1922.9 He died in 1941.10 He was buried in St John's Cemetery, Gananoque, Leeds & Grenville County, OntarioG.10,11

A short autobiography was included in a newspaper article recognizing his 90th birthday published on 16 November 1938.
