This shows the following obituary for Matthew Bennett Sr.:

Bennett, Matthew, was born in the U.S., and came to Canada with his wife soon after their marriage, settling a short distance east of Hamilton. 53 years ago, he and his wife joined the M.E. Church. Two years later, he was licensed to exhort. In 1827, his wife died. For several years, he has lived with his daughter, Hannah, wife of J. Teeple of Beverly. He died, Jan. 2, 1861, at home of his son, J. Bennett; age, 89. Five of his children and several of his grandchildren are following Christ. Unquote

Matthew's son, mentioned in the above obituary as J. Bennett may actually have been T. Bennett. For the moment, this is a guess.

We only know the given name of Matthew's wife, Thankful' from a memorial, No. (Vol. A 263 on microfilm GSGS1421, see pages 31 and 32). This represents a land transaction that sells the north half of lot 11 of the 2nd concession of Beverly Township by Matthew and Thankful Bennett to David Obble (David Able). At that, we are fortunate that even Thankful's given name appears, for it has almost the look of being an afterthought, having been interlined between lines 1 and 2 at the top of page 32. This transaction is dated January 7th, 1818.

Beyond this, we only know of the year of Thankful's death, 1827, as it appears in Matthew's obituary.

We do not know where Thankful is buried. Matthew is buried in Troy Cemetery, but this cemetery was not established until around 1836 or 1837.

We know a little of Matthew's children. The above obituary tells us of Hannah, wife of John Teeple, and Matthew Jr. Young Matthew died only a few years after his father and is buried with him in Troy Cemetery. Census information as well as some obituary information may be followed for son George, who lived to a goodly age. J. Bennett is mentioned and remains to be found. There was another son, however, Thomas, who resided in Nelson Township in Halton County and Matthew Bennett Sr. is to be found with him and his family in the 1851 census. Thomas Bennett and his wife Kezia are buried in Salem Cemetery in Nelson Township.

Also buried in Salem Cemetery is a Mary Bennett, 1800-1890, the wife of Jacob Van Norman, 1793-1883, who, with this minimal information, may, with a bit more research, prove to be Matthew's daughter.
