Wentworth County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. Thomas P. Bradshaw in the year 1859.

John Bennett, 46, born Canada, residing Beverly. Parents Matthew and Thankful.
Deborah Field, age not given, born Canada, residing Ancaster. Parents James and Maria.
Witness John Teple (Teeple) of Beverly.
On Nov. 2nd, 1859.

Typically, the exact location of a county marrage isn't given. We may note however that Rev. Bradshaw performed two marriages on November 2nd, and the residence of the bride for both was Ancaster. It's a guess, but the marriage was probably held in Ancaster.

DeathHe died on 17 March 1896 at Beverly Township, Wentworth Co., Ont., at age 82.
BurialHe was buried at Jerseyville Cemetery, Ancaster Twp..
NoteHe Death reg. 021381-96 Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co.
John Bennett died March 17, 1896, age 83. Farmer. Methodist. Born Canada. Physician and informant Dr. Gibson of Jerseyville, Ontario.

Dr. Gibson filed the death registration on March 19th and Wallace McDonald, township clerk in Beverly, copied the date onto the registration form as March 17th. McDonald's handwriting takes some creative reading, but his ones and sevens are written differently and distinctively. It's entirely possible that McDonald misread the physician's handwriting for the date of death as it appears on the transcription of the Jerseyville Cemetery is shown as 11 March 1896. The transcription done by Interment.net, however, shows John Bennett's date of death as 17th March, so we must believe the above death registration to be correct.

(Find-a-Grave has a clear photo of the gravestone's inscription and it does indeed read 17th March 1896.)

Several children of Esther and Deborah are shown on the family's gravestone in Jerseyville Cemetery and, at least initially, names and dates for these children are taken from the cemetery's transcription as provided by the Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.
