"James A Lares, 70, of 115 Standart Avenue, died Friday, Nov 6, 1987 in Auburn Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr Lares was a native of New York City and had resided in Auburn more than 35 years. He was a former corrections officer, retiring in 1977, after 30 years of service. During World War II, he served with the Special Forces Group of the 7th Army in Europe and was the recipient of the Silver Star Medal. He then continued his militaty career in the Army Reserve and the National Guard. He was a former commander of the Auburn Guard Unit of the 108th Infantry, retiring with the rank of Major in 1977. In former years, he was active with both Post 1975 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the National Rifle Association.
Surviving are a son, James A Lares of Port Byron; two daughters, Mrs Judy Dove of Auburn and Mrs Janine Danaghy of Syracuse; 7 grandchildren; a brother, William Lares of Maspeth, Long Island; a sister, Mrs Dorothy O'Leary of Camillus; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice Burnash Lares in 1985 and his daughter Jacalyn Lares in 1958.
Family prayer services will be held at 8:30 am on Monday, Nov 9, 1987 at The Farrell Funeral Home, 84 South Street. Friends are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial at 9 am in St Alphonsus Church. Interment will be in St Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours at the funeral home will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm on Sunday."2
